A Free Country Music Playlist From Denim On The Diamond

It is no secret we are country music fans.  From growing up at Dauphin Countryfest, visiting Nashville or attending Rockin River Country Music Fest, Watershed, Dierks, and Kip Moore to creating our own Country Music Concert in Kelowna that includes some of the best country music artists Canada has to offer – we have listened to old country and now crank the new era of country music that fuses pop, rock and rap.

Thanks to Kelowna country music radio station NewCountry 100.7 for always keeping our country music playlist fresh, and supporting our Country Music Festival in Kelowna.  They have some great free online music on their website here.

These are the new country music songs we are listening to right now – and the story behind the songs.

Check out the Spotify Country Music Playlist at the bottom of the page.

CHAD BROWNLEE – Forever’s Gotta Start Somewhere

This song signifies changes both personally and professionally. It is about a fresh start. Something great has to have a beginning – running into someone on the street, saying hello, or opportunities that come up. It is about that bold first move in introducing yourself to someone new, which could potentially be a lifelong love.

Chad says this song is a manifestation of where he is in his life right now. The song gets lots of airplay on Kelowna Country Music radio NewCountry 100.7 because Chad is a great local guy from Kelowna.

KIP MOORE – The Bull

This song throws some shade at anyone who takes the easy road more travelled. It’s a reminder of the importance to live in the moment and to use adversity as an opportunity to push forward. To go after it. To grow from the failures and keep chasing your goals. It’s about being thankful for everyone who has helped you in your life, while also appreciating the journey.

Kip Moore said this song is “my middle finger to anybody that thought I was done……. It’s all the bumps and bruises taken along the way, and I am thankful for every time I got bucked off. It kept me pushing harder and hard and shaped who I am.”

One thing we appreciate most about Kip Moore is he does not compromise himself or his art for the Country music industry. He stays true to his authentic self and has a devoted group of fans who appreciate he has not tried to appeal to younger generations.

This song also reminds us of Theodore Roesevelts quote The Man in the Arena.

JAMES BARKER BAND- Keep it Simple

These guys came into the Canadian Country music scene in 2015 after winning the Boots & Hearts artist showcase.  Since then they have won CCMA and Juno’s for Canadian Country Music Album of the Year.

We are pretty excited to have them perform on our stage in Kelowna on August 31st of the September long weekend.

This song…. Is about staying in on a Friday night with your girl or guy.  It’s about keeping it simple – Here at the house / Dance in the kitchen /  Straight to kissin’ on the couch / Let’s pop a bottle / Let’s drink it slow / Nothin’ to do, nowhere to be / Nowhere to go.

James Barker Band writes their country music  while keeping in mind how it’s going to translate live, and how it will affect their live show. ‘Keep It Simple’ is really fun and upbeat, which means it’s going to be a blast when performed live.

MAREN MORRIS – The Bones

Maren Morris splices together pop and Country music to create fun, upbeat and optimistic songs.

The Bones is a story about a strong long-lasting relationship that weathers the storm.  It is a reflection of a sturdy relationship – When the bones are good / the rest don’t matter – and that no matter what else is going on in around the relationships the partners can rely on each other and trust the foundation they have established.

The Bones is a new country music song we are excited to see performed this summer at the Rockin River Country Music Fest in Merrit, BC this summer.  Maren Morris released her second album, Girl, on March 8th and there will be a few songs that will rise up the Country Music Radio charts!

OLD DOMINION – One Man Band

A song about having someone, or a ful band, in your corner on this journey called life.  It is about finding a partner you can take on life’s adventures with.

Matthew Ramsey, lead singer of Old Dominion, explained the song’s concept. “One of the things we talk about the most in this band is how we can’t imagine being on this crazy ride alone. We have each other to celebrate the highs and get through the challenges with. It’s one of the best parts of being a band.”  The band talks about it being the same with life and love. You can tackle it alone, but sometimes there is another person out there who adds something to your ‘music’ that you would never had on your own.

Something we love about country music songs is that they tell a story, and today’s music fuses old-fashioned country, lyrical wit, rock n’ roll grit or pop into music that can cross genres.

KACEY MUSGRAVES – High Horse

A song about an arrogant, pompous, eggotistical person, this funky danceable track is has a throwback to the disco days.

Musgraves said of the song, “We all know that character that is just a little high of themselves; they’re just a little bit arrogant. Everyone has that character in their life, and then I got to write it, and, oh my gosh, it is the most fun ever.”

In an interview Musgraves said she was  “on a huge Bee Gees kick” while creating her Golden Hour country music album and wondered what might happen if she mixed the Saturday Night Fever icons sound with country music: “I was inspired by a thought of a world where all these ideas could come together musically,” Musgraves said, “and still translate as good songs if I sat down and played them on my guitar.”

Musgraves recently won Album of the Year at the Grammy’s and Country Music Awards.

DIERKS BENTLEY – Burning Man

Burning Man is an event held each year in the Black Rock Desert of northwest Nevada, which focuses on art and self-expression. This song tips its hat to the annual festival.

The song was not written by Dierks or Brothers Osbourne, but, according to songwriter Luke Dick the song writer, a significant portion of the lyrics drew inspiration from his experience at the Burning Man art festival.

To Luke, all the great people who are letting loose at the desert festival represent the “burning man” in the averyday person and the desire to be free from the captivity of the monotony of life.

While Bentley recognizes the Burning Man vibe, he understands the need for balance. “I felt an immediate connection to the lyrics, the idea that we all are a little bit of everything… a little bit holy water and a little bit burning man… really resonated with me.”  This is why he decided to sing the song, and after he texted his friends Brother’s Osborne asking if they wanted to be on the song they responded within 2 minutes with a YES.

One of our favourite Country Music songs this year, which we saw performed in Kelowna when he was here.

KELSEA BALLERINI – Miss Me More

A country-pop song about rediscovering yourself after a bad breakup,

In this country music song Kelsea notes the reasons why she’s better off without her ex as she lists his various demands when they were together. The result was the loss of her independence.

Ballerini said of the song: “In a lot of young relationships, you fall in love for the first time and you give every part of yourself to make it work, but, sometimes, when it’s not treated right, that’s how you lose yourself. I think it’s really a beautiful moment when you get to the other side, and you’re looking in the mirror and you’re like, ‘Huh, I thought I was going to miss him but – actually – I miss me!’

Ballerini had the hook for a while, ‘I thought I’d miss you but I miss me more.’ and it wasn’t until she partnered up with pop / rock writing legends did the song manifest into a country music hit.

LOGAN MIZE – Somebody to Thank

The lyrics pay homage to the people and experiences that have made Mize the person he is today.

Logan is an inspiration and model for any artist who is trying to make it – he has experienced the adversity and ups & downs along the way.  He struggled for years in Country Music capital of Nashville by having being turned down by every label, having to hold day jobs such as being a party bus and dump truck driver, and a bought with homelessness.  He persisted and held strong to his dream of entertaining people and after numerous recording projects falling through he finally released Logan Mize in 2009.

Logan played at the Ok Corral in Kelowna this past winter.   His musical influences include John Mellencapm and…. Bruce Springsteen!
